Steve Kerr's Epic DNC Speech and Gold Medal in the Olympic Games

Steve Kerr, head coach of the US Olympic team and the Golden State Warriors, gave a great speech recently. He closed with "Night Night, Donald Trump," in the words of Steph Curry.

He began by sharing his excitement about being back at the United Center, a place steeped in history, especially from the '90s. For the younger crowd, he suggests Googling Michael Jordan to understand its significance. He mentions the incredible energy that once filled the arena and notes that he can feel that same winning spirit in the air tonight.

Kerr recalls his recent experience in Paris, France, just nine days ago, where he last stood in a packed basketball arena. There, 12 of the best American men came together to win Olympic gold, followed by another 12 of the best American women achieving the same feat the next night. He reflects on how this victory serves as a powerful metaphor for what the United States represents: individuals from across the country, who typically compete against one another, joining forces to represent their nation. The sight of the American flag being raised, the national anthem playing, and gold medals being placed around the necks of these athletes, whose hands were held over their hearts, marked the proudest moment of Kerr's life.

As a coach, former player, husband, son, father, grandfather, and American, Kerr believes in a certain kind of leadership. He values dignity, honesty, the ability to laugh at oneself, and a genuine care and love for the people being led. He believes leaders should possess knowledge and expertise, while also recognizing that no one has all the answers, and that some of the best solutions often come from the team. Kerr suggests that the qualities people look for in their friends, bosses, teachers, or mayors should also be the qualities they desire in their president.

He points out that, when viewed through this lens, the choice is clear. Kerr sees all of these qualities in Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, who have dedicated their lives to serving others. Says Kerr "And after the results are tallied that night, in the words of the great Steph Curry, they can tell Donald Trump: night night."
